Barista

West Town Bakery is a full service bakery & restaurant in Chicago serving Dark Matter Coffee along with a full bar. The bakery is looking for serious baristas with experience on a semi-manual espresso machine to work their Dark Matter coffee bar and behind their retail bakery counter!

Role

The barista is the face of West Town Bakery. Barista is directly responsible for the brew and sale of coffee and will have the opportunity to share each coffee's unique story and flavor on behalf of growers and the entire Dark Matter Coffee Company. Forming good guest relationships is vital to creating repeat customers, or "regulars."

Baristas should be able to recommend coffees based on guest preferences as well as their own favorites, and answer most questions about coffee. While reading and studying facts about coffee are important, there is a certain aspect of coffee knowledge that is only obtained by tasting different varieties or brews and noting the distinctions among them. Barista must do this often, and even if a given coffee is not their favorite, the barista should seek positive ways to describe flavors.

Barista will also be selling a wide variety of West Town’s baked goods from cakes and cake balls, to croissants, to lemon bars and loaves of bread. Barista will be responsible for tasting all of the items and being able to describe them, in detail, to guests; making suggestions and pairings when called upon. Barista will be producing all of the coffee based and alcoholic beverages for their diner as well as answering the phone and taking to-go orders. This is not a coffee shop but a full service restaurant.

Requirements

  • 1+ years experience
  • Latte art skills
  • Must be able to start as early at 6AM
  • Must have an Illinois Food Service Handler's and BASSET certificate
  • Must be a team worker
